can anybody verify this: At 11:29 AM yesterday, the temperature in Tokyo rose 77 degrees Fahrenheit in just a few minutes, breaking a record for sudden temperature rise in the city set in 1923.

there is NOTHING about this in the US media

At least in my corner of Tokyo, the daily high has been anything but. It's been getting more and more like winter.

Are you sure you're not thinking of a few days ago? There was the remnants of a typhoon over northern Honshu that brought warm air to Kanto for a day, and rose temps to a little over 70degF. The trade-off was that it brought strong wind. This late in the year, it was considered unusual and it set records for highest temperature in December.

I would think a temperature rise of that much (daily temperature lately has been around 50degF, so were talking a 27 deg rise) within a short interval would damage objects like glass and maybe plastics from sudden heat expansion.

Depending on the source of your information (which you didn't reveal), the anomaly could be explained as a temporary miscalibration, mistake in observation, or mistake in reporting. For the record I haven't heard anything about this in Japanese media either.

thank you James. i suspected that the source was full of it. typical 'fear talk' that seems to be quite prevelant on the internet. there was also mention that Japan has been hit by no less than 17 typhoons this year- also not mentioned in the news here. any truth to it? the source(s) are convinced mother earth is on the verge of severe reaction to global warming, warming ocean surface temps and increase CO2 content, etc. wish the psuedo-scientists would keep their mouths shut as it does nothing but cause more distrust amongst the general masses for the real scientific data.

peace to you all in Japan btw!

That part I can believe. That typhoon that brought us warm winds a few days back was Typhoon #27. I realize that not every named typhoon hits Japan, but that just gives you an idea of how many ran through the east Pacific this season.

Unfortunately, I think we really are on the verge of some potentially drastic environmental changes due to global warming (both natural and human-induced) but that's just my opinion.
