Hello everyone my wife & I are planning to visit Tokyo this summer.
I have 3 questions I am hoping you can answer.

1) From June onwards what weeks are the best for sunny weather in Tokyo?
Or what weeks should I avoid for rain?

2) What's the best priced airline to Tokyo from USA- Los Angeles to be exact?

3) What's the best priced Hostel in Shibuya or Shinjuku for people in their 40's?

THANKS!

Hi and questions

I don't live in Tokyo, but am planning a trip there. I want to spend about a month in Japan: Tokyo, Osaka/Kyoto and even a jaunt up to Sapporo.

I build my own electronic instruments and perform original music and am interested in doing some shows while there. I have another friend who is also interested in making this happen. We are not amateurs, but we don't have talent managers or agents to help in this process.

Can anyone on this tribe help a nice guy out with some contacts?

I can share examples of music and some video of performances.

Thanks!!

Hey,

I'm a belly dancer and I've just started a Japan Belly Dance tribe. I've listed a lot of events (mostly in the Tokyo area) but I thought if any of you were looking for something to do, it makes for a really fun night. It's at:

http://tribes.tribe.net/japanbellydance

I was also wondering if anyone knew of a similar kind of tribe for Tokyo or Japanese art/events?
Thanks,
Eshe

So I'll just leave a message incase anyone wanders into this ghost town.. If you do infact live in Tokyo and if you are often drinking in the Shinjuku to Ikebukuro area, please either reply to this thread or send me a message.

where to stay and where to rock

Hello!
I am planning a trip to Japan this summer (July) and I'm looking for places to stay. I'm planning on perusing Tokyo first, and then moving my way around if I have the means to do so.
I'm excited to experience art, anime, egl awesomeness, rad parties (with some dubstep, jungle, dancehall/reggae, dub, psychedelic, booty bass, breaks, etc.), engrish, food, and much, much more.

If any of you have been to Japan, or are in Japan, or whatnot, and can provide some suggestions, that would be awesome
I would prefer places to stay that are safe, friendly, quiet, clean, non-smoking, and affordable, as I am working on a budget.

Thanks so much for your help!

^_^

Kitten

Are there any Tokyo/Chiba area folks who want a little black kitten?

Yesterday during cleaning time some of my elementary school students found an abandoned kitten outside, near the school, in the rain. They brought the kitten in. It was very small, maybe one week old, and its eyes were dirty and crusted shut. I warmed up the kitten, cleaned it until it could see again, and fed the kitten with and eye dropper. Another teacher took the kitten to the vet last night. The vet says that it ishealthy and lucky. It is small, all black, and as of yet the sex is unknown.

I am taking care of the kitten tonight (regular bottle formula feedings and cleaning) but my apartment does not allow pets. No other teachers are in a position to adopt. School is out for the summer, and it's easy to get kids to fall in love with kittens... but parents are another matter. I don't know how long I'll be able to care for the kitten, or how much I can get the other teachers to help.

(photo of kitten here: img.photobucket.com/albums/v...g/cat.jpg and I can take more pictures)

Hey beautiful people. I'm soo excited! My son is on tour with Def Tech! Have you seen him? His name is Lafa Taylor. They have invited me to come to their shows in Tokyo end of June. They will be on tour when I arrive in tokyo June 22nd. I plan to be there for at least the weekend before heading out to a friends in Nagoya then returning the following weekend for the shows. So I am asking the same old question. Inexpensive hotels or ryokan ideally close to nite life and action, or at least the Yamonate line. Other fun ideas?

Sanshin building to be demolished

Unfortunately the developers and urban planners are at it again. With the destruction of doujunkai in Harajyuku and many other historical structures around Tokyo soon the few structures that survived the Kanto earthquake and WWII will be gone. The owners of the Sanshin building near Hibiya park (central Tokyo near kokyo/Imperial Palace) in conjunction with a group of developers have plans to demolish the building to make way for yet another urban office and shopping space.

For those that don't know the building is an awesome example of 1930s art deco pre-war architecture. In near mint original condition there are great small shops, restaurants and offices inside. The building has been featured in a number of movies. It's one of the few remaining old structures that surrounded the Imperial Palace area.

There is a group of people who have organized to try and save the building. I've included their URL below. It would be helpful to sign their petition and perhaps send some emails to Japanese consul offices around the US.
There's a super cool cafe there...one of the coolest in Tokyo. It's still open now as of April but will soon close. If you have the chance please check it out while its still there. It's called the New World Cafe.

Good News: There is a slight chance I might be renting an apartment in Kinshicho, East Tokyo.

Bad News: I'm only familiar with West Tokyo (I've stayed in Shinjuku/Koenji/Kichijoji), all I know near Kinshicho is Asakusa, really.

Anyone have any pointers for this district and nearby locales?

cheap accomodations in tokyo?

I was in Tokyo once for five crazy, exhilarating days in spring of '99. I Stayed at a capsule hotel in Akasaka but only sleeping about 4 hours per night -so much to do!

Can anyone reccomend another type of Tokyo accomodation that is under $75(US) per night? I've heard about the Ryokan style hotel, which sounds interesting. Love the Japanese baths!

How about hot nightclubs that feature cutting edge Tokyo music, like Melting Banana or something on the crazy edge?

Arigato!

I am looking for contacts in Tokyo to help me set up a creative cluster. This is a space where people from the creative industry share space, facilities and sometimes clients. I am doing it in Amsterdam and it works really good.

Check my website www.ph14.nl

Hi,
I'm new here. I'll be staying in Tokyo around new years and I'm having a really really hard time trying to find a place to stay. Every time I find something without a cerfew that's under $220 a night it's all booked up. If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them. I don't want to be sleeping out on the street. Thanks.

Golden Week Party in Chichibu

If you're going to be in the Kanto area over Golden Week, you might like to attend the EarthlingZ Golden Week Gathering at The Greenhouse, a musical guesthouse/party space in the mountains a bit beyond Chichibu.

The format is informal, with many musicians attending, excellent food being served, and music almost all the time, both in the giant upstairs room and in the garden.

There will be ethnic instrumentalists, and trance and ambient DJs. Many futons are available, but it might be a good idea to bring a sleeping bag, and appropriate clothing for traipsing in the mountains.

Check out the announcement at; http://earthlingzjp.blogspot.com/2005/04/golden-week-gathering-at-greenhouse.html

Also, I've heard it's hot in June--and muggy. How hot and how muggy? Is it as bad as New Orleans or New York in the summer?

As spring begins, it starts to become more interesting to travel around Japan. Back in the 70s I spent several years doing mainly that, travelling the country on a motorcycle, armed with camera and a desire to find the Japan that had developed in my imagination from literature and old Japanese art. One series I did was an attempt to create photographs with something of the character of haiku. Here's a gallery of a few of them:

I have this thing for the old school Hostess fashion. You know, garish colors and bad mini-skirt outfits. I also go weak in the knees when I see the late '80s style 'yanki' girl fashion. My wife says I am akushumi, but I really don't care. What the world needs is more cheesy fashion from the '80s and early '90s.

I know this is a wierd question, but dammit, I need an answer.

I know of one mexican restaurant in Tokyo: El Torito in Shibuya (near Hachiko exit). Anyone know of any others?

It feels like November outside. I thought it was still September? Anyone notice the dramatic change in temperature since that typhoon rolled through a few days ago?

Bento

Bentos. Basically, who offers the best bentos, which is your favorite, and do you accept the clerks offer to nuke your bento on the premises or do you take it home so "you can do it right"? Oh, and do the clerks offer you sporks instead of chopsticks?

Answers:
- 7-11.
- Yakiniku don.
- Decline the offer.
- Usually. Since I like sporks, I take the spork and also ask for a set of chopsticks.

Before obtaining our own nuclear, I had the local clerks trained to nuke my bento until the paper tags turned black. I mean, there is nothing worse than getting a mouthful of cold rice in the middle of your bent.

BTW, SPORKS RULE!
